About Lip Augmentation
Men and women alike are attracted to the allure of full, plump lips. To add volume to the upper and/or lower lips, lip augmentation can be performed with implants made of a synthetic, flexible material. Patients of Y Plastic Surgery may also consider temporary lip fillers for thin, uneven lips if they want to avoid surgery and implants, or if they want to test different sizes before settling on lip implants. The placement of implants or the injection of fillers can give gorgeous, natural-looking results, regardless of whether thin lips are caused by genetics or advanced age.
Dr. Asaf Yalif, our double-board certified plastic surgeon, will explain all of the options and surgical techniques at the initial consultation to help each patient choose the best method that will meet their needs.
- Lip Implants
Implants in the lips can increase lip size with a synthetic material, but augmentation can also change the softness of the lips. Most surgeons use a silicone implant like PermaLip® that makes lips feel more natural but with added volume, or an Advanta® lip implant that is firmer to the touch.
AlloDerm integrates with the natural tissues and fibers within the lips. Tissues harvested from cadavers are injected into small incisions in the lips, giving a full, natural appearance and feeling to the lips.
- Fat Filler
After a patient has had fat removed through liposuction from one part of the body (such as the abdomen, back, or thigh), the plastic surgeon can purify that fat and transfer it to the lips. This lip injection is not a surgical procedure.
- Injectable Filler
Injectable fillers can temporarily plump lips with collagen, hyaluronic acid or calcium hydroxyapatite. This is a nonsurgical option, and perfect for patients who would like a non-permanent option, as effects will fade after several months.
The ideal candidates for upper and/or lower lip augmentation surgery are men and women who:
- Have thin lips
- Have tried injectable fillers and desire a longer-lasting enhancement
- Are allergic to injectable fillers
- Have overall good health

What to Expect
Depending on the augmentation option the patient chooses, surgery may or may not be needed, but all of the treatments can be performed as an outpatient or in-office procedure. With the insertion of implants or the use of AlloDerm, incisions at the outer corners of the mouth are required for implantation. The incision openings will be closed afterwards with dissolvable sutures. Injections of fat or medical-grade dermal fillers do not need incisions and will be implemented with a syringe. It may take several injections to give patients their desired fullness. Patients can expect the lips to be tender and sore for several days after the surgery. Scarring is very minimal with a lip augmentation surgery because the incision is placed on the outside of the mouth in the natural crease of the lips. Once healed, the incision is barely noticeable at all. Aftercare instructions will be given to properly care for the lips.
Lip implants are made with flexible, synthetic materials that look and feel natural under the skin. With time, the swelling will subside and the implant will integrate with the natural tissues and fibers of the lip. Patients who do not like their lip implants or who change their mind can have them removed. Fat grafting and dermal filler injections will slowly absorb into the body and thus the lips will naturally become smaller over time. Repeated treatments will be needed to maintain results.
